electric supercharger review

When it comes to an electric supercharger at B2B DIY Electric Supercharger we want to spread awareness of current electric powered blowers being sold. Because there are so many scams it is best to learn as much as possible about electric superchargers and put that knowledge into action by building your own unit. B2B Electric Supercharger is your trusted and leading authority for real do it yourself (DIY) electric supercharger plans. It is our goal to establish and online community for people that are interested in building their own electric supercharger.

Electric Supercharger Basics

Before we start to look at the various electric superchargers first let us talk about some basic electrical power requirements and basic forced air induction theories. As mentioned above there is such a thing as real electric superchargers such as the units made by Thomas Knight. It is helpful to be able to tell the difference between a real power adder and product that will produce practically no gains in performance. A real electric supercharger is an electric driven compressor ( either a turbocharger scroll or root supercharger ) powered by the battery of the corresponding automobile or a separate bank of batteries carried within the corresponding automobile.

The difference between electric superchargers boils down to the compressor. A real electric supercharger uses a real compressor. A turbo scroll is an internal compression device. It makes its own compressed air within the turbo scroll. With every rotation of the impeller air is grabbed and pulled into the turbo scroll. The air is then thrown into the inner walls of the turbo scroll at a high rate of speed with centrifugal force. Here the air is smashed together converting high speed low pressure air into low speed high pressure air. Root compressor are external compression devices. The root blower builds up boost pressure by pumping air into your engine until pressure builds up.

An electric supercharger using a real compressor must be able to obtain a certain impeller or rotor speed in order to produce boost. When a turbocharger is placed on a car it is driven by wasted exhaust gases. The impeller inside the compressor housing can reach speeds of up to 240,000 rpm. Now keep in mind that for a modest gain of 5 to 6 psi of boost pressure you don't need to turn the impeller to its max speed. In the case of a turbocharger compressor attached to an electric motor the electric motor must be able to obtain a certain impeller speed for a given amount of boost pressure you wish to want.

Electric Supercharger Using A Garret TP38 Compressor

As mentioned above this blogs purpose is to provide information about electric supercharger to help get a better understanding of how they work, if they work at all. For example we will use the Garrett TP38 turbocharger based electric supercharger pictured above. I have seen many of these blowers being sold online on websites like eBay claiming to make up to 6 psi of boost pressure. With that amount of pressure you could expect a 40% increase in horsepower for your car with a noticeable increase in torque as well. Man, that's great and at such an affordable price per horsepower gained.

However the impeller speed and power usage of the electric supercharger contradicts the compressor map for the turbocharger compressor. Every turbocharger and supercharger produced by a known company has a compressor map. The compressor map shows in detail the efficiency of the compressor, the amount of boost pressure produced at a given impeller rpm, and the amount of air that flows from the compressors either in pounds per minute or cubic feet per minute.

The advertisers of the electric supercharger have posted the impeller speed of the electric supercharger. The stated speeds are 6,600 rpm for 12VDC for 6 psi of boost pressure and 13,200 rpm for 24VDC for 6 psi of boost pressure. I did a google search and found the compressor map for the TP38 turbocharger compressor that is being used. This compressor map will tell us exactly how much impeller speed is required to in order to flow a certain amount of boost pressure.

The compressor map below does not give exact boost numbers so you have to know how to input the right information in order to find the amount of pressure you want to find. So to find how much boost this compressor is putting out you will need a calculator or sheet of paper to do some simple math.

TP38 compressor map

First we take the number 14.7 which is the normal atmospheic pressure at sea level. Then add the amount of boost pressure you want. For example lets use 6 psi. Then you divide by 14.7 and that will give you a pressure ratio. So the math problem should look like this: 14.7 + 6 psi = 20.7 / 14.7 = 1.4 pressure ratio. Now look for the pressure ratios along the graph and find the number 1.4 on the compressor map. Follow the line directly across and you will see the line rest on approximately the 75,000 rpm mark. So the compress map for the Garrett TP38 Turbocharger show that in order to get 6 psi of boost you need an impeller speed of 75,000 rpm.

Now the impeller speed listed as an electric supercharger is lacking at best. So lets divide 75,000 rpm by 6 psi to see how much impeller speed is required for each psi. We get 12,500 rpm for each psi. So this electric supercharger at best will in theory produce approximately under 1 psi of boost pressure. Also keep in mind that once the electric motor is placed under a load when it is trying to compress air and force it into an engine you can expect the impeller speed of the electric supercharger to drop. With this information you will be able to get an approximate of exactly how much boost pressure is being produced by an electric supercharger using a turbo scroll by comparing the known impeller speed to its compressor map.

Here is some information about this electric supercharger and the power usage

4.6 amp draw @ 12 volts-----3PSI
9.2 amp draw @ 24 volts--5-6PSI
435CFM @ 12 volts
628CFM @ 24 volts
weight 8 pounds
LxWxH:8"x8"x8"

Regardless if you use an electric motor to drive a turbo compressor it still requires power to compress and flow air. The faster you want the impeller to spin the more amperage and voltage will be required. For a simple homemade blower like this for every psi ( pound of pressure per square inch ) requires approximately 1HP or 746 watts of electricity to compress air. From the power usage information above you can see that the power usage is not up to the job of providing enough power to the compressor.

However a true measurement of the actual horsepower of the electric motor should not be measured by the electric motor amperage and voltage usage. Electric motor horsepower should be rated by the amount of torque the motor is able to produce times a given rpm divided by 5252 ( torque  x  max motor shaft rpm / 5252 ). This is a true measurement to determine the horsepower of the electric motor.

 Vortex 5 psi Electric Supercharger

The Vortex 5 PSI Supercharger™ Includes:
900 Watt Motor
Safely generates over 5 PSI of boost
Computer Guided, Laser Cut 10 Blade Turbine
Spooling @ 20,000 RPMs+
Maximum Boost in less than 1/10 of a second
2” – 3.5” Rubber Couplers
High-Flow Air Filter
Step-by-step Installation Guide
Heavy Duty Securing Clamps

This unit above is an axial flow electric supercharger. You can find this blower being sold online like on websites such as eBay and other online stores. It is comprised of a sheet metal fan that is powered by a 12VDC motor. It comes with a cone air filter and rubber couples to attach to a ram air intake. This particular unit claims to be able to produce 5 psi of boost pressure on any engine size up to 5.7 liters. However as long as these units have been sold there seems to be no compressor map available to show exactly how much boost pressure and air flow the unit is supposed to put out.

These types of electric supercharger are an improved ready to sell to the public version or the first electric supercharger called the E-ram. We all know that we need boost pressure in order to get a gain in horsepower. Any pneumatic engineer will be able to tell you that fans are poor devices for compressing air. Fans are great for flowing air but not for compressing air. So by placing a fan in your intake you will not see a gain in horsepower as these units claim. Because a fan does not have the ability to compress air any air that is forced into your engine will simply pass back through the fan blades before a pressure build up occurs. Also the fan motor simply does not have enough power to spin fast enough or hard enough under a load to force air into your engine to create boost.

These unit were meant to separate novice car owners from their hard earned money. The first electric superchargers were nothing but model airplane fans (electric ducted fan units) being sold for hundreds of dollars. At most you would gain about 2 to 3 horsepower from the unit. Regardless if you are using a plastic fan from a model air plan or a sheet metal fan its all the same principle. A single fan placed inside a shroud will not add any meaningful performance to your car. We have provided some links to actual electric supercharger testing and dynos. Compare the information for all the similar units and you will that they pretty much the same. See for yourself exactly how much horsepower was gained from a fan based electric supercharger.

eBay Marine Bilge Blower Electric Supercharger

ebay electric supercharger

Electric Supercharger

This electric supercharger is sold on eBay and other online site. Actually this is a marine bilge blower. This device is used to remove exhaust from the engine compartments of boats. Putting this in your car will not give you the performance your want. This contains a blower wheel that is powered by a very weak electric motor. This unit can be found advertised online for hundreds of dollars being sold as an electric supercharger. The sellers buy these units in bulk at wholesale for $15.00 or so and mark up the price in order to make a profit. You are better off building your own electric supercharger compared to using any of the three units reviewed above.

Check Out This Video

Some novice enthusiast have very little knowledge about basic forced air induction when it comes to making boost. Many sellers of these things know that and take advantage of your lack of information. However a device like these may have some benefit and it might improve throttle response on small displacement engines. This can be confusing and misleading because you actually think your engine is in boost but its really not. For the money you would spend on these thing you could either build a real working electric supercharger or a real modification that would give you the same or better responsive throttle. Its nothing but one big electric supercharger scam and unless you know what to look for you can end up falling for it. ELECTRIC SUPERCHARGER DYNO ( FAN )

This blog is all about you and your decesion to purchase an electric supercharger to increase the performance of your car or truck. This update features a real electric supercharger dyno. A group of automotive students have conducted their own test. Purchased from sites like eBay or other websites is your standard sheet metal fan powered by a 12VDC electric motor. It is side that a picture is worth a thousand words, however video is a whole lot better. Check out this electric supercharger dyno video and see the performance not gained for yourself.

Check Out This Electric Supercharger Dyno Viedo

Now for years sellers of these units have be pushing these blowers on unknowing people and none of the sellers took the time to make a simple video like the one above. These days video is among the top methods to get the word about your product. Surely one of these sellers would have made a video to support the claims of there product. Imagine how their sells would go through the roof if theyhad an electric supercharger dyno video to support the claims of their performance product. But as the video showed us that these things do very little or nothing at all. So the 5 psi of boost pressure that comes with these things claims have finally been proven to be false. Spread the word brothers so others don' fall for these scams.

Building Your Own Electric Supercharger System

Building your own electric supercharger system can be a fun and worthwhile do it yourself project. Most importantly it prevents you from falling for the current electric supecharger scams. A hand full of companies have invested the time and money into developing their own version of an electric supercharger system as well as do it yourself budget blowers made by enthusiast. The concept of the electric supercharger is catching on and is not just a fab. Serious development is being put into these units that hopefully produces an affordable version for the performance parts market that will help to lower the cost of real working units.

How exactly does the electric supercharger work? The electric supercharger works by an electric driven compressor forcing compressed air at a high rate of speed into an intake manifold which increases the pressure at the point where air is entering the cylinders at a greater mass air (oxygen) will be forced in as the inlet manifold pressure increases. The additional high speed static air flow makes it possible to maintain the combustion chamber pressure and fuel/air load even at high engine revolution speeds, increasing the horsepower and torque output of the engine.

Until an affordable electric supercharger system is made available to the performance parts aftermarket enthusiast must resort to building their own real working electric supercharger. With the proper knowledge building the unit should not be difficult. The principles of forced inductions are not had to grasp and any average enthusiast should be able to apply these principles to their project.

By building the electric supercharger system yourself you are gaining knowledge of the basic forced inductions principles involved with supercharging. Once you have successfully constructed your own blower you can impress your friends with your new found knowledge and build units from them as well. This is a great project that will only take a few hours to construct once you have all your parts assembled.

An electric supercharger system are not just limited to car and truck applications. You can build the unit to be used on boats, motorcycles, snowmobiles, and jet skies. Internal combustion engines regardless of what type of vehicle it is in can benefit from an electric supercharger system. Below are some of the benefits of an electric driven forced induction device.

  • An affordable performance parts alternative compared to other supercharger kits.Easy installation often done in less than two hours.
  • Modest Boost created by the electric supercharger of 1 to 2 psi so expensive ecu tuning my not be required.
  • Adds over 10% to 15% horsepower on engines up to 3.0 liters.
  • Instant spool up at the throw of a switch no turbo lag.
  • Innovative design reduces current draw of the electric supercharger.Does not require expensive modifications to your vehicle.
  • Cool air charge temperature that equals more horsepower gains.
  • Compliments your current performance modifications resulting in more horsepower and torque.
  • Perfect solution to your performance needs.
  • Operates like a NOS system at wide open throttle without the refills.
  • Fun do it yourself project.
  • Learn something new and beneficial.

Currently real working electric supercharger systems are very expensive. The few companies that do manufacture real working units have priced their products so high that most are not obtainable by the average enthusiast on a budget. The units can range in price from $1,200 to a hefty $3,000. The limited usage duration electric superchargers does not justify the cost of the unit while traditional supercharger kits are available that produce extra horsepower without interruption in pressurized airflow delivery.

A solution to the high cost of overpriced electric forced induction units is to simply construct your own real working electric supercharger system. Constructing a real working system can easily be accomplished because of readily available information that can be found on the internet that can help you construct a custom electric supercharger for your particular engine.

                                                   Electric Motors

When building your electric supercharger you have a choice for motor selection. This article has been written to help you get a better understanding of the difference between the two types of electric
motors.

Electric Supercharger Brushed Motor Or Brushless Motor Selection

When constructing an electric supercharger you have the option to use either a brushed motor or brushless motor. Both motors when used as the driving force for an electric supercharger have their own set of pros and con. This article will explain in detail the pros and cons of using either of the two. Hopefully this article will provide you with useful information that will help you decide which type of motor is best suited for the construction of your electric supercharger.

Using a brushless motor to drive your electric supercharger will result in some amazing performance gains for your car or truck. A direct current brushless Motor uses a permanent magnet external rotor, three phases of driving coils, one or more Hall effect devices to sense the position of the rotor, and the associated drive electronics. The coils are activated, one phase after the other, by the drive electronics as cued by the signals from the Hall effect sensors, they act as three-phase synchronous motors containing their own variable frequency drive electronics.

Pros For A Brushless Direct Current Motor
  • Electronic commutation based on Hall position sensors
  • Less required maintenance due to absence of brushes
  • Speed/Torque- flat, enables operation at all speeds with rated load
  • High efficiency, no voltage drop across brushes
  • High output power/frame size.
Reduced size due to superior thermal characteristics. Because BLDC has the windings on the stator, which is connected to the case, the heat dissipation is better

  • Higher speed range - no mechanical limitation imposed by brushes/commutator
         Low electric noise generation

Cons For A Brushless Motor
  • Higher cost of construction
  • Control is complex and expensive
  • Electric Controller is required to keep the motor running. It offers double the price of the motor.

Even though using a brushless motor is great there is also benefits that come with using a brushed motor for your electric supercharger build. A Brushed Motor has a rotating set of wound wire coils that is called an armature which acts as an electromagnet with two poles. A mechanical rotary switch that is called a commutator reverses the direction of the electric current twice every cycle, to flow through the armature so that the poles of the electromagnet push and pull against the permanent magnets on the outside of the motor. As the poles of the armature electromagnet pass the poles of the permanent magnets, the commutator reverses the polarity of the armature electromagnet. During the instant of switching polarity, inertia keeps the classical motor going in the proper direction.

Pro For A Brushed Motor
  • Replaceable brushes for extended life
  • Low cost of construction
  • Simple and inexpensive control
  • No controller is required for fixed speeds
  • Operates in extreme environments due to lack of electronics

Brushed Motor Cons

  • Periodic maintenance is required
  • Speed/torque is moderately flat. At higher speeds, brush friction increases, thus reducing useful torque
  • Poor heat dissipation due to internal rotor construction
  • Higher rotor inertia which limits the dynamic characteristics
  • Lower speed range due to mechanical limitations on the brushes
  • Brush Arcing will generate noise causing EMI

The Selection of either a brushless motor or brushed motor is totally up to you and your performance needs to increase the horsepower of your naturally aspirated engine. For
modest boost applications and mild performance gains a brushed motor coupled with your electric supercharger seems practical while at the same time affordable. For a higher boost application and jaw dropping throttle response with a 1 to 3 psi gain for your naturally aspirated engine a brushless motor is the way to go. Check back to this electric supercharger review for more information and updates.

UPDATE 19 SEP 2012

Currently working on a belt driven electric supercharger. It is an experimental unit that should produce slightly higher impeller speeds for 3 to 4 psi of boost pressure. Seeing that impeller speed is directly related to making boost the ultimate goal is to turn the impeller as fast as we can with the available power of a 12V or 24V battery system.

Got my parts made at the machine shop and assembled the belt driven electric supercharger. However once I assembled the unit I noticed the impeller would grab a little at one point through its rotation. So I took the unit apart to find out why the unit was grabbing. I found out the four mounting bolts holes of the main mounting plate were off a little. So I sent the plate back to the machine shop to be opened up a little hopefully to solve the problem with the impeller.

Electric supercharger are cool but my thoughts about these projects evolve as more power is required, ease of usage of all the parts, and limited usage of an electric supercharger because of overheating a unit, or the amperage draw depleting a battery. We need more power, more boost, without some of the limitations of current electric superchargers. What is needed is a supercharger has the ability to be installed easily, makes 5 to 6 psi of boost, affordable, and is used only when needed like a real electric supercharger. To meet these requirements I have been developing a pneumatic supercharger.

A pneumatic driven unit that can be either an air power supercharger or  CO2 powered supercharger. The unit is a Eaton M90 attached to an air motor. The air motor is capable of 17 horsepower. That is enough horsepower to drive the supercharger for engines sized 1 to 5 liters. The unit has the ability to make up to 20 psi of boost on 2.0 liter and 5 to 6 psi on engines up to 5 liters. Boost will raise if engine displacement lowers, so smaller the engine the more boost it will make. The unit will run on CO2 or an on board air system. With on board air you will have approximately 30 to 45 seconds of boost available, With the CO2 tank you will have approximately 5 minutes of boost before the bottle needs to be recharged.

The concept of the electric supercharger is cool if you want a 10 to 30 HP gain. But if want the 5 to 6 psi which can be a 50 to 60 HP gain promised with most electric supercharger that you never get then a pneumatic supercharger is the way to go. Imagine eliminating turbo lag using the pneumatic supercharger as a turbo assist. Or using the pneumatic supercharger with an on board air system and there will be no need to run nitrous oxide (NOS) because you simply recharge your air system when the tank is empty instead of going to buy more nitrous oxide when the bottle runs out.

When I a done with the electric supercharger I am working on I will post some pictures of it and impeller speeds. When I am done with the pneumatic air power supercharger I will post some pictures and information on it as well.

ELECTRIC SUPERCHARGER FOR SALE???

When I first started this project my intent was to offer a do-it-yourself ebook that had two purposes. First the ebook was meant to inform people that lacked basic forced induction theory knowledge. Second it was meant to offer a real solution  to the ongoing electric supercharger scams. With the B2B Electric Supercharger Manual you can now build your own electric supercharger.

However recently I have been contacted by several people to build them a real electric supercharger. I have planned to build a 24V version of my current 12V electric supercharger. With an increased voltage the 24V version will be able to produce more horsepower over a wider range on the powerband of your engine.

I have begun to source parts and contact suppliers to find the most affordable parts. By finding the cheapest parts and cheapest labor I will be able to past the savings on to the customers. But this project that was never meant to grow pass a do-it-yourself manual now in order to move past an ebook I need your support.

This is how it works, every ebook that is purchased helps B2B Electric Supercharger raise funds in order to buy parts. I don't intend to start a business out of this project unless I have the support of the community. So in otherwords I am saying buy the ebook and the additions and soon we will be able to start a production run of real electric superchargers.

Now I know what you are saying, I don't want an ebook because I want to buy an electric turbo kit with everything already included. But the problems is all those inline electric supercharger you see on websites like ebay and amazon simply do not work. They claim a 50hp increase but you are lucky if you get 3 to 5 at most. But with this ebook you spend your money on building a real electric supercharger. So go to the website and buy your copy today and get started with your build.
